Exchange Server 2007 SP1 - Obstacles to In-House Deployment

Does this look familiar to you?Does this look familiar to you?
It’s a common site for IT departments who face daily server challenges. In addition, uptime requirements, the hiring of new employees, the inability to maintain and monitor the servers 24 x 7, and unfamiliarity with the intricacies of Microsoft Exchange are just a few of the obstacles faced by IT departments deploying a previous version of Exchange or another email program in-house. Like many, you may be interested in migrating to Exchange Server 2007 SP1 but need to take into consideration some of the pitfalls and roadblocks to a successful on-premise migration.

64bit Hardware Requirement
One of the primary obstacles to in-house deployment of Exchange Server 2007 SP1 is the requirement for new 64bit hardware. This new requirement causes a number of difficulties including the need for a significant capital outlay because in place upgrades are not possible. All new hardware and software must be purchased. Although this new 64bit hardware requirement assures faster performance, many small and mid-size businesses may be unable to allocate a large amount of capital for this purpose.

Training and Hiring of IT Personnel
In-house deployment of Exchange Server 2007 SP1 will also require additional investments in training of existing IT personnel and/or hiring of new employees. Exchange Server management can no longer be done via a graphical user interface as it was in previous versions of Exchange and requires staff to be retrained on the numerous commands necessary to ensure proficiency with the new command line interface.

Server Maintenance, Monitoring and Upgrades
As email has become THE mission critical business application, the requirement to ensure continuous uptime has become a key obstacle to an in-house deployment. You will be required to invest additional time and money in continuous system maintenance, monitoring and backup. Anti-virus and mobility software may also require significant upgrades in order to support the new features of Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

The large capital expenditure, new hardware and software requirements and training of key personnel will make the migration process more time consuming and cause lengthy delays in in-house deployment.

The Hosted Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Alternative
Why go through the hassle, expense and delays of deploying your own Exchange 2007 SP1 server when you can be up and running immediately with 123Together.com? Take advantage of the same industry leading messaging and collaboration features of Exchange Server 2007 SP1 with our hosted Exchange service. Get your email at any time from anywhere in minutes and let us maintain, monitor and upgrade the hardware and software for you. Add, modify and delete users via our easy to use web-based administration interface and contact our U.S.-based technical support staff 24 x 7 with any questions you may have. We will also support your mobile business users with full BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), Windows Mobile and Good Mobile Messaging support. With 123Together.com’s hosted Exchange Server 2007 SP1 you can have enterprise-class email at a small business price. Sign Up Today!

123Together.com Welcomes Apple’s Support of ActiveSync

iPhone will soon have wireless synchronization with ExchangeApple recently announced their support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync in the beta release of Apple’s iPhone 2.0 software. Although a popular mobile device with consumers, the iPhone has not been widely accepted as a business tool due to its lack of two-way wireless synchronization with Microsoft Exchange Server. With Apple’s licensing of Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, iPhone users will be able to take advantage of the full features and functionality of our hosted Exchange service with mobile support previously only available to users of BlackBerry, Treo, PocketPC, SmartPhone, and Windows Mobile devices.

Although two-way wireless synchronization will not be widely available on the iPhone until June, users can take immediate advantage of 123Together.com’s hosted Exchange service to access their email wirelessly through IMAP in addition to their office PCs, laptops or from any online device via a web browser.

Collaborate Across Town or Across Continents

Modern corporate culture is changing and because of globalization, growing mobility and an increase in the importance of networking, people’s work habits are changing as well. More and more people prefer to work in teams, but not necessarily face-to-face. Some employees work from home while others collaborate across remote offices or even across continents. The tools needed for modern businesses to succeed are increasingly collaborative but may not be accessible to small and mid-size businesses primarily because of their high implementation and maintenance costs. 123Together.com’s hosted Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 is the solution. Hosted SharePoint Services allow users to share work schedules, compare notes and work together with colleagues and partners from other locations on virtually any type of file. It provides access to documents from any location at any time via a web browser. 123Together.com’s hosted SharePoint Services may also help you launch and maintain web sites, intranets, picture libraries and bulletin boards.

Outlook Tip of the Month

In Microsoft Outlook 2007, the work week is by default set from Monday through Friday with a work day extending from 8 am to 5 pm. The first day of the week in the calendar is Sunday. Users can choose the days of the week that are a part of their work week, the time when their work day starts and ends, and the day of the week with which they want to start their work week. It can be done by selecting Options on the Tools menu, then clicking Calendar Options, and changing the settings under Calendar work week. This is primarily used to check users’ availability for meeting requests from other people.

Did you know? Default reminder for today quick flag in Outlook 2007 is 1 hour before the end of user’s work day. Tomorrow, This Week and Next Week flags default to the time of the start of the workday as set in Calendar Options. These times are controlled by the start and end of the work day. The only way to change them is to change the work day time.

We’d Love to Hear From You

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading our May newsletter and that you found the information useful. As always, please feel free to let us know if there is anything that you would like to see in upcoming issues.

Migration Assistance Offered For Hosted Exchange SP1

February 27th, 2008

Burlington, MA, February 27, 2008 - 123Together.com, the leading provider of hosted enterprise-class messaging and collaboration solutions such as hosted Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 and hosted Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1, today announced the availability of migration tools and assistance for small and mid-size businesses (SMBs) who wish to migrate their email from a previous version of Microsoft Exchange Server or another email program to its hosted Exchange Server 2007 SP1 service.

123Together.com’s hosted Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 service empowers businesses to take advantage of the same messaging and collaboration tools used by Fortune 500 companies by providing them with immediate access to the latest version of Microsoft Exchange. 123Together.com’s hosted Exchange service offers businesses greater functionality, and improved stability including access to Exchange 2007 SP1 features such as a more efficient and easier to use interface for Outlook Web Access, support for mailboxes as large as 15GB, fast performance on 64bit servers, shared and dedicated (including clustered dedicated) server options, instant message searching capabilities and more.

IT managers wishing to utilize Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 in-house are discovering that it will be an expensive and time consuming road ahead.  An in-house upgrade requires a significant capital outlay due to the requirement for new 64bit hardware. In place upgrades are not possible from prior versions of Exchange Server to Exchange 2007 and additional personnel may need to be hired or existing staff re-trained for proficiency with the command line administration interface utilized for the management of Exchange Server 2007.  Other peripheral applications such as Backup, Anti-virus and mobility software may also require significant upgrades in order to support Exchange Server 2007.

Companies can capitalize on 123Together.com’s hosted Exchange Server 2007 SP1 without making investments in technology or personnel. Additionally, customers have the advantage of utilizing this technology without having to manage, monitor and maintain in-house hardware or software on an ongoing basis. Along with full Exchange 2007 SP1 access, customers receive an easy to use web-based administration interface, 24×7 US based phone and email support, and full support for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, Windows Mobile and Good Messaging Server support. 123Together.com also provides customers with a 99.9% uptime guarantee on its shared servers and a 100% uptime guarantee on its dedicated servers.

“The new hardware and additional financial outlay required for an in-house migration to Exchange Server 2007 SP1 has caused many businesses to rethink a possible upgrade,” said Ravi Agarwal, chief executive officer of 123Together.com. “However, by using 123Together.com’s Exchange 2007 hosting service, we will work with individual businesses to migrate their mailboxes and data as quickly or as slowly as they require and provide them with automated tools to customize the process to their needs.  Transitioning employee email at a rate that they can easily absorb is key to making the migration as seamless as possible.”

In its continuing quest to offer messaging solutions with the highest availability, 123Together.com is now offering new dedicated Exchange hosting customers the option of utilizing Local Continuous Replication (LCR) or Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) services with their Exchange 2007 dedicated servers. The LCR option allows for a fully redundant mirror of all hosted data to be maintained on the customer’s Exchange Server on secondary storage devices whereas the CCR option allows for customers to have an alternate server which maintains a full mirror of their data. By utilizing 123Together.com for their Microsoft Exchange Server needs customers can take advantage of these latest technologies which have been improved with Exchange Server 2007 SP1 and maximize their server availability and uptime.

The Outlook Web Access which is offered with Exchange Server 2007 was redesigned to enhance ease of use and has been further upgraded with Service Pack 1 to offer even more enhancements:

Public Folder Access:
Service Pack 1 now supports the creation, modification and access of public folders by OWA in addition to MS Outlook.  This allows companies to share documents and access files via an Outlook and OWA and also use search capabilities.

Enhanced Security:
The new S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) feature helps secure messages by preventing impersonation and tampering with email messages in OWA. Users can now encrypt outgoing messages and attachments so that only intended recipients who have a digital certificate can read them. A digitally signed message assures the recipient that the message has not been tampered with.

WebReady Document Viewing:
The addition of WebReady document viewing in Service Pack 1 now enables the conversion of Word documents, Excel worksheets and PowerPoint presentations into HTML files allowing documents to be viewed as a web page.  This is helpful for mobile users who may only be able to access files via a web browser.

In addition to these key OWA enhancements, Service Pack 1 also provides 123Together.com customers access to other OWA features such as personal distribution lists, recovery of deleted items, monthly calendar views, and additional language support in spell check.

Import of PST Files:
Service Pack 1 now allows 123Together.com to assist its customers in migrating to its Exchange 2007 platform by also providing the ability to import Outlook .pst files directly to the exchange server. This service allows small and medium sized enterprises to migrate from older versions of Exchange to Exchange 2007 SP1 hosted by 123Together.com over a night or a weekend by just providing access to the mailbox data.

“Uptime and the ability to communicate and collaborate from anywhere at anytime have always been of primary importance to SMBs.  With the new features in Service Pack 1 our customers can now be even more certain that they are utilizing the best-in-class messaging and collaboration tools to grow their businesses,” said Ravi Agarwal, chief executive officer of 123Together.com.  “With the addition of replication and OWA enhancements our customers can be assured of being able to access their data any hour of the day or night no matter where they are in the world.”

Hosted Archiving Solution Allows Public Companies to Meet Looming 2007 SEC Deadline

November 6th, 2007

Burlington, MA, November 6, 2007 - 123Together.com, the leading provider of hosted enterprise-class messaging and collaboration solutions such as Microsoft Exchange Hosting and Hosted SharePoint, offers a hosted archiving solution providing public companies with the ability to comply with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations associated with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

The compliance deadline for Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which established rules and regulations for financial and accounting disclosures of public companies, has been extended to fiscal years ending on or after December 15, 2007.  Small and large public companies alike must abide by all archiving and compliance regulations by the end of 2007.

123Together.com’s Exchange hosting service combined with its hosted archive solution is designed to help public companies meet the demands placed on their electronic communications systems by Federal regulations. It delivers a security-enhanced and virtually tamperproof archiving solution for email, allowing public companies regulated by the SEC to store and retrieve communications as they strive to comply with the data and transaction demands of this regulator.

This centralized mail repository is deployed in a hosted environment. Once archived, messages can then be accessed through a security-enhanced, web-based interface. Flexible search queries can then be used to locate messages quickly. Upon retrieval, users can conduct a variety of actions, including tag, file, export, forward via SMTP, and restore.

“Public companies now have a financially viable resolution to the rigorous demands of SEC regulations.  Our hosted archiving solution does not require any upfront capital investment, allows IT personnel to focus on more important tasks and enables the company to quickly become compliant with SEC imposed deadlines,” said Ravi Agarwal, chief executive officer of 123Together.com.  “Businesses may also choose to utilize our hosted Exchange service but are not required to do so to take advantage of our archiving service.  They can exploit the functionality of this service with their in-house Exchange server or with a POP3/SMTP setup - while saving money by not having to install or manage any new hardware or software on their new server.”

123Together.com Offers Customers Early Access To Microsoft “Titan” As A Hosted Service

October 30th, 2007

Burlington, MA, October 30, 2007 - 123Together.com, a leading hoster of enterprise-class messaging and collaboration solutions such as Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Windows SharePoint Services v3.0 and Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0, announced today that it is participating in Microsoft’s Early Adopter Program for the next generation of Microsoft Dynamics CRM, version 4.0, code-named “Titan”, and selecting customers to receive early access to a hosted “Titan” solution.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM is a customer relationship management application which helps businesses increase sales, enhance their level of customer service, and improve corporate profitability.  123Together.com currently hosts services such as Microsoft Exchange Server, Windows SharePoint Services, and Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0. It allows SMBs to take advantage of enterprises-class messaging and collaboration solutions at a cost they can afford and without the technical personnel needed to maintain the servers in house.

As part of the Microsoft Technology Adoption Program (TAP) for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, 123Together.com has been given early access to “Titan”, and will be distributing it as a hosted service to a select group of customers on November 1, 2007.

The most significant enhancement which 123Together.com customers will experience with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 as a hosted service is the ability for them to use the application immediately. Customers were previously required to purchase an additional server solely for the use of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 and, as a result, incurred added costs and additional set up time. Utilizing Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 in a hosted environment allows customers to be up and running right away and is easily scalable as their company grows or needs change. This allows customers to pay for only the number of users they have, removes the requirement for dedicated hardware and eliminates the need for any long term contracts.  System availability, scalability, management, patching and monitoring concerns are also managed by 123Together.com allowing customers to focus on their core competencies and on growing their business.

In addition, customers will be able to significantly increase their company’s productivity by utilizing preconfigured customizable templates designed for specific industries or by developing their own workflows within the application.  Whether it’s finance, medical, real estate, insurance or numerous other industries, customers will be able to gain additional insight into their customers’ behaviors, improve customer service and increase revenue.  Microsoft Corp. is currently offering preconfigured templates for the manufacturing industry and the public sector and will make additional templates available over the next few months.

“We are pleased to be able to make Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 available to our customers as a hosted service,” stated Ravi Agarwal, chief executive officer of 123Together.com. “With the addition of this service, our small and medium business customers will have access to a customizable, easy to use enterprise-class customer relationship management solution.”

Customers wishing to be considered for inclusion in 123Together.com’s Early Adopter Program for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 as a hosted service can receive further information at http://www.123together.com/crm/Microsoft-CRM.xhtml.
